Brandon Handeland

Hey, I'm Brandon.

Software engineer, tinkerer, and Wyoming native.
Building things since the late '90s.

Life at 7,200 Feet

I live in Laramie, Wyoming — a small college town sitting on the high plains between the Snowy Range and the Laramie Range. It's one of those places where the sky takes up most of the view and the wind has a personality of its own. The elevation keeps things interesting: snow in May isn't unusual, and summer nights still call for a jacket.

I've been doing remote tech work from here for years now. There's something about being in a quiet place that makes it easier to think through hard problems. The commute is about fifteen steps, the coffee is always fresh, and I can step outside and not see another screen for miles.

Things I Build

I've been writing code since the late '90s, and the thing I keep coming back to is the simple satisfaction of making something that works. Not for a sprint board or a quarterly review — just because there was a problem and I wanted to solve it.

That habit has produced a trail of side projects over the years: Python packages on PyPI, Perl modules on CPAN, a VS Code extension for Git blame, Firefox add-ons, and various experiments on GitHub and GitLab. I also run Unbuffered Technology Solutions, a small consultancy I started in 2016.

Lately I've been spending a lot of time with AI tooling — building agent workflows, automated code review systems, and experimenting with what's possible when you let LLMs loose on real engineering problems. It's the most fun I've had writing code in a long time.

When I'm Not at a Keyboard

Wyoming makes it hard to stay indoors. The Snowy Range is a half hour away, the Medicine Bow National Forest is right there, and there's no shortage of open space in every direction. I try to get outside as much as I can — hiking, fishing, or just driving somewhere with no particular destination.

I'm also a bit of a gearhead when it comes to home tech — always tinkering with something, whether it's a home lab setup, a new automation idea, or whatever rabbit hole I've fallen into that week.
